Niantic has created a new kind of gameplay by combining mobile devices, their understanding of map technology, and a desire to get people moving outdoors.
Many people know Niantic as the developers of Pokémon GO, and for good reason. With impressive stats like 1 billion+ downloads and 7.2 billion kilometers walked while playing (in 2022 alone) the numbers speak for themselves.
We weren’t the first ones to re-discover The Niantic.
The Niantic was a whaling vessel that made its way to San Francisco during the gold rush. After being blocked in the harbor it was repurposed into a mercantile and hotel. In the great fires of 1868 the ship was burned and buried within what is now the financial district. Later in the the 1980’s the hull of the ship was re-discovered by a construction team — which sparked our idea.
What if this wasn’t the end of the ships story?
In early science fiction imaginative novels predicted the future of flight with Airships. They were uniquely engineered ships of all shapes and sizes utilizing unknown principles powering inventor-heros on their adventures. This was the perfect bridge for our idea. With this concept of “retro-futurism” we were able to bring The Niantic back to life, inspiring new adventure and inviting everyone on board.
We have evolved with Niantic ensuring their origin story, brand narrative and visual language continue to be embraced.
Working alongside executives and other team members we helped define the mission, values & pillars that the company wanted to project outwardly.
From there, we developed the tone of voice, personality & visual identity that the organization uses to communicate these values with. Presenting all this information in the form of an Atlas only made sense — after all, Niantic is mapping the world down to the centimeter.
Today the brand atlas serves as the creative guide informing 2,000+ employees and countless brand partners as we work together inspiring people to explore the world.
